Scientific term used for the lower jaw and its horny covering (without adjective) and in such a way contrasting with 'maxilla', which is without adjective referring to the upper jaw. Mandible (as well as maxilla) is also often used in a broader sense, referring to either jaw with the adjective 'upper' or 'lower'.
