(Part of the) common name of Cygnus spp., in the family Anatidae (Duck family, order Anseriformes). Male swans are sometimes called 'cob' and females 'pen'. There are nine species of swans; all large, herbivorous, aquatic birds with particular long necks and powerful, spatulate bills, which show no sexual dimorphism in plumage.
