Rallidae

Characteristic for this family is a combination of short to medium length barbules, vase-shaped nodes (20-30 per mm) which abruptly decrease in size, and heavy pigmentation. Pigment is heavily concentrated in nodes and parts of internodes, this is immediately evident under low light microscope magnifications. Species examined within this family: Rallus aquaticus, Crex crex, Gallinula chloropus, Fulica atra.
